Hudemchuk was 5 in 1933. In her village, Pavelki, some 200 people died of starvation, while close to 2,000 died in next-door Lebedynets. Her 14-year old brother carried the mail from the neighboring village and got paid 400 gm of bread per day. Her mom was pregnant and collapsed in the field while working. The collective farm boss took pity on her and gave her some peas and millet from the farm stores. The father travelled to Russia and exchanged some clothing for bread, then sold his wife’s earrings at Torgsin for some flour.
