Description

Letter sent from: Village of Kremenchuk, Poltava oblast
Letter describes events in 1932-1933 in: Village of Lypianka, Karlivka raion, Kharkiv oblast
Current location name: Village of Lypianka, Karlivka raion, Poltava oblast

Olha Orlova was 14 at the time of the famine and lived with her parents and four siblings in the village of Lypianka, Karlivka Raion, Kharkiv Oblast. Search brigades took all their grain and food. The father was sick and then died, her mother and her 3 sisters worked at the kolhosp for meager rations. They were cooking and eating weeds to survive. Some people died after eating unripe rye, their skin hung loosely instead of getting swollen. The village was devastated, with many abandoned and ruined huts overtaken by weeds. Life after the famine was a life of poverty: too little grain was given for working, and the taxes were heavy. Orlova experienced life-long deprivation.
