Author Platon Fedorenko was 13 at the time of the famine. "Storm trooper" search brigades were taking everything away, detaining and torturing people kept in detention, and demanding they reveal information on any hidden grain. Mass deaths occurred in the village. His father and older brother died of starvation. He believes that the famine was artificially created by Stalin and his unwise policies (collectivization) and supports memorialization of the victims.
His mother would cook a mixture made of weeds. To survive, he and his two sisters began working on the collective farm and received a ration twice daily at work. He believes that the famine was artificially created by Stalin and his unwise policies (collectivization) and supports the memorialization of the victims.
