The author was born into a “seredniak” family (middle peasant); was friendly with the local Komsomol members; worked in the Donbas in 1928-1929, says things were going well. Hell broke loose in 1932; in 1933 600 people died in 500 households. Ownership of 6 desiatynas of land equaled a kurkul verdict. Seredniaky were treated harshly. Post-WW II work norms and conditions were harsh in the kolhosp; high taxes, no days off. Notes shutdown of travel for food or work in 1933. Blames state officials who farmed out the work to a variety of lowlifes and NKVD without maintaining control. Discussed categorization and situations of “poor” peasants.- Notes
