Letter sent from: Vinnytsia
Letter describes events in 1932-1933 in: Village of Kovalivka, Nemyriv raion, Vinnytsia oblast
Current location name: Village of Kovalivka, Nemyriv raion, Vinnytsia oblast

Pavlo Mysak was a student at the pharmacological institute in Vinytsia at the time of the 1932-33 famine. The Mysak family resettled from the kolhosp to Vinnytsia, where the father obtained a job as a guard in an office. Mysak provides a grim picture of rural conditions: collectivization was a disaster as it impoverished and de-incentivized the peasants; collective farmers let go of their cattle and did not cultivate their own land. Resistance was futile, and those who rebelled were deported to Solovky prison or Siberia. As a student, Pavlo was given a ration of 50 grams of bread a day. Most students were swollen and dying; Mysak’s family survived because of his mother’s ingenuity in cooking mock foods. The city residents were also starving so they could not help the peasants. In May 1933, Mysak was sent to a radhosp (state farm) in Kovalivka, in Nemyriv raion of Vinnytsia oblast to conduct "political agitation." He notes that the radhosp was poorly run. Hryhorii Petrovsky had visited Kovalivka prior to Mysak’s arrival. Following his visit, an extra railroad car of flour was given to Kovalivka to distribute among the people. As a result, many died from consuming bread after prolonged starvation. After Mysak finished working in Kovalivka, en route to the railroad station in Nemyriv, he encountered a group of five people leaning against the trees, all of whom turned out to be dead. He could never forget the scene.
