Sych’s mother died in 1932 and her father was unable to provide for his two children. She had to beg but by spring of 1933, when many other people had died, she was too worn out, and was sitting outside half-conscious. Her neighbor, the boss of the dairy farm, picked her up, took her to the farm, and asked some workers to give her milk. She stayed in the farm for a few days and somewhat recovered. The little girl did not want to leave, so the board of the collective farm decided to allow her and her brother to get a liter of milk a day. She went every day to fetch milk from the farm with her own bottle. This supplemented soups made of weeds, and they survived.
Sych was treated in a children's sanatorium because she was falling off her seat in school. She was given a coat and her brother was given boots “by Postyshev.” That way, her brother went to school fully dressed in the morning and she went in the afternoon. She is grateful to Postyshev and cannot believe he was an “enemy of the people.”
