Varvara Zubachevska was 11 at the time of the Famine. She lived with her parents, paternal grandmother and two siblings. The father was a middling peasant who joined the Association for Joint Land Cultivation (SOZ). He was assigned three grain procurement targets, fulfilled the first two. For failing to fulfill the third, he was threatened with the confiscation and auctioning off of all his possessions. He kept working in the SOZ but was not paid, so the family was slowly starving, sharing the rations that the parents and Varvara, who also had to work, received per workday at SOZ: watery rye soup and 100 grams of bread per person. They relied heavily on mock foods, such as weeds and animal skin. Her father, grandmother and little brother—Yakiv, Maria and Oleksii Davydenko, died in a single month.
Her future husband’s family lived in Rizhky, Tarashcha Raion, Kyiv Oblast. His father was killed when he went to Tarashcha to get some food, while his mother and three siblings died of hunger. One sister was adopted by her uncle. Zybchevsky, who was 15 at the time, ran away with some other boys, found work in a state-run farm in Kherson, and survived. Altogether, five members of his family died during the Famine: Mykhailo, Motrona, Vasyl, Maria, and Todoska.
