Letter describes events in 1932-1933 in: Khotiv, Kyiv-Sviatoshyn raion, Kyiv oblast
Current location name: Khotiv, Obukhiv raion, Kyiv oblast
Ivan Pohrebny was 10-11 at the time of the Famine. Their village, Khotiv, was close to Kyiv, so there were stores and markets nearby to trade goods for food, but the Famine affected their village, too.
In 1932, the horses first started dying of starvation. In 1933, people began to die. Those who worked in the field [at the collective farm] were receiving a ration of soup and soy bread. Still, “several dozens” died in the village of 400-500 households. There was one case of cannibalism, when a mother and daughter killed the 12 year-old son.
Pohrebny remembers being swollen and singing a song glorifying Stalin at a school concert.
In the neighboring village of Roslavychy in Vasylkiv Raion, more than half of the residents died of hunger.
