Hordiienko recalls how difficult it was to survive in their family of a single parent, mother, and 5 children. Activists were watching for people to use millstones or slaughter pigs for which people could get arrested. Once his teacher fed him after school because Hordiienko was surviving on weeds. He decided to start working in the collective farm for the meager ration. He managed to steal some peas from the field so that his mother could cook some soup. However, when he went back to the field at night to steal more peas, activists caught and severely beat him. After that, he quit working.
