Description
Nikolai Bokan and three of his sons – Boris, Lev-Leonid, and Aleksandr – commemorate the death of their son and brother, Konstantin, who died of starvation. The group is seen solemnly seated at a table. Featured at the centre of the table is a display board that documents Konstantin’s death. Although the text is largely indecipherable, four of the five featured photos are visible, including photos of Konstantin’s corpse, funeral, and grave, which are featured elsewhere in this photo directory.

The display board is framed, and forget-me-not flowers are placed above the frame. Notably, this photo provides the only evidence of this display board, as the original is not found in Nikolai Bokan’s criminal case file.

Konstantin died of starvation in June 1933. In the few months prior to his death, he had been working on a collective farm where he was overworked and poorly fed. He had left the family home earlier in the spring of 1933. As his parents were struggling to provide for their large family during the famine, Konstantin was leaving the family home to take up work and residence at a collective farm. It is unclear whether he was asked to leave or whether he left of his own accord. Konstantin would have been around twenty-two years old at the time of his departure.

Cups, saucers, and a teapot have been placed on the table, which is covered in a patterned tablecloth. Framed images are hung on the wall behind the table. The two sons on the left are wearing shirts with embroidered trimming.
