Description

A photo display board created by Nikolai Bokan in 1936. The board offers a timeline of events in the life of Nikolai Bokan and his family, ranging from 1865 to 1936. Inscriptions are written on many of the photos, and additional descriptive text is displayed on the right-hand side of the board (see “Inscription Details” for more information). One quarter (14) of the 55 photos displayed are related to the famine, illustrating its significance in the spectrum of the Bokan family’s experiences. Over three quarters of the photos can be presumed to have been captured by Bokan.

Interspersed among the photos of the family are images of renowned figures revered by Bokan, including Jesus Christ and Ghandi. Also featured are photos of books that had most influenced him, namely The Gospel in Brief and The Calendar of Wisdom by Leo Tolstoy.

Nikolai Bokan was an adherent of the Tolstoyan movement, which was based on the philosophical and religious writings of Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy’s views were formed by the study of the ministry of Jesus. The movement promoted values of non-militarism, vegetarianism, and moral improvement, and aspired for the attainment of a rural, self-sufficient livelihood.
