- Description
- We see neither the end nor the beginning of this long line of people that winds through a little square beyond a shuttered kiosk, past a small city building and down the street. There is no sign visible on the building. Wienerberger states that the people are waiting to obtain black bread, the inferior quality of bread that was available at the time.
In his memoir, Hart auf hart. he also mentions that several shops opened in 1933 in Kharkiv where bread could be purchased at greatly inflated prices in rubles without a ration card. It is possible that this establishment is this kind of store, as explained below. The large waiting crowd is an indication that supply and delivery is not meeting the demand.
