See PEEWEE, pg. 21 Greenwell advances to final rounds of Toronto Star amateur Coming off an impressive third-place finish at the recent Golf Association of Ontario men's amateur championship, Georgetown's Robbie Greenwell has also advanced to the final rounds of the Toronto Star Men's Amateur tournament this week. Greenwell, 20, carded rounds of 76 and 74 at the Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club on Tuesday and Wednesday and was 16 shots back of runaway leader David Markle of Shelburne. The Star tournament, considered North America's premier city championship, switched to the Scarborough Golf & Country Club for the final 36 holes yesterday and today (Thursday and Friday). Greenwell's teammate on the University of Memphis men's varsity golf squad, Gavin Aldridge of Georgetown, shot a 74 on the first day of the tourney, but missed the 36hole cut. At the GAO Amateur in Oshawa earlier this month, Greenwell fired a final round 68 and still finished 11 shots back of winner Andrew Parr from London. ··· A couple of North Halton Golf & Country Club members have qualified for next month's Canadian amateur junior championship after their play last week at the Ontario tourney held in Thunder Bay. Ryan Putnam, 17, recorded rounds of 7781-76-78 to finish in a tie for 30th overall. The top 40 finishers qualified for the nationals, to be held Aug. 6-11 at Sussex, N.B. Georgetown's Ryan Thomson, 15, placed tied for 39th after shooting 76-76-80-82 in Thunder Bay. Another North Halton member, Luke Ovenden, shot rounds of 78-8478-75 and took 42nd spot. Sarah Grigor of Georgetown tied for 31st at the GAO's Junior Girls' Championship at the Willow Valley Golf Club in Mount Hope. The 18-year-old carded scores of 8391-81, several strokes back of the leaders. ··· Mark Tressel of Georgetown ended up tied for top spot in the A Flight with Jim Morley with 66 Stableford points each at the Kiwi Tour stop at Kitchener's Rockway Golf Club. Another local resident, Aiden Finucane, won the C Flight after collecting 64 Stableford points. `Shaker Mo' shares some tips Former Toronto Blue Jays' centrefielder Lloyd Moseby conducted a defensive skills clinic recently in Hornby for Greydon Morris and a couple dozen other minor baseball players. `Shaker Mo', as he's nicknamed, said the best thing that happened to him was getting cut from a rep team at the age of 11, which made him realize that natural athletic talent had to be complemented with hard work if he was going to make it to the Majors. The 46-year-old Moseby makes his home now in Sacramento, Ca. and has three children. His youngest son, Lydell, is a highly touted catcher. Photo by Eamonn Maher
