Ex-Raiders to tangle in NCAA's Frozen Four Two former high-scoring Georgetown Jr. A Raiders will meet up in U.S. college hockey's main event next week when the NCAA's Frozen Four faces off in St. Louis, Missouri. Local resident Jay Sprague, a 20-year-old freshman with the Michigan State Spartans, and Brampton's Vince Laise of the University of Maine Black Bears performed well for their respective teams during the regional qualifying tournaments held this past weekend and are set to clash in one of the national championship semi-finals next Thursday. Sprague netted his third goal of the season on Friday as the Spartans downed Boston University 5-1 in the Midwest Regional semifinal, and played a strong defensive role as a member of Michigan State's S-line group of forwards in their 2-1 upset of number-tworanked Notre Dame, earning a spot in the Frozen Four, also known as the NCAA Division I championships. Laise also played a regular shift on the right wing for Maine, although he was kept of the scoresheet in the Black Bears' 4-1 win over St. Cloud State and their 3-1 triumph over Massachussetts in the East Regional at Rochester, N.Y. Meanwhile, Georgetown resident Ryan Ellis was a member of the Oswego State Lakers' team that recently captured the NCAA Division III title in Superior, Wisc., shocking three-time defending-champion Middlebury, Vt. 4-3 in overtime in the championship game. Ellis, a sophomore forward who was second in Laker scoring this season with 16 goals and 26 assists in 26 games, did not play in the championship tournament for undisclosed reasons. Former Raider goalie Chris Hyk of Hamilton is also on Oswego State's roster. Atom AA Raiders Tri-County playoffs continue for Georgetown's Endzone Sports Exchange Atom AA Raiders.
