Not much but both continue to be a theme for a popular event run locally every May. This year's organizers of The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee, sponsored by Bronte Corporate Centre and scheduled for May 3 at Halton Hills Banquet Hall, Milton, are thrilled to offer sport car racing fans a chance of a lifetime. Car nuts can bid on a ride at a track in a Ford GT with a 550hp engine that has been modified for even more power and torque. Proceeds from the live auction will go toward funding local adult literacy programs. If you want to check out your ride, drop into Gallinger Ford in Milton, the week of April 28. The Milton car dealer is sponsoring the track fees for the car and has agreed to house the GT in its showroom. "This is such an amazing opportunity for car buffs," says Bee organizer Theresa MacDonald. "The car is even bee-coloured--yellow with black stripes!" The annual adult spelling bee just keeps getting bigger and better. Last year the event saw the live auction of a ride in a Ferrari Enzo and through sponsorship, a silent auction and ticket sales managed to raise more than $20,000. Since it began in 2004, the Bee has raised more than $40,000 for adult literacy programming. The hilarious event will see 23 teams of three battling for spelling supremacy. Teams represent a variety of local businesses, non-profit agencies and service clubs. The Royal Bank Milton Mall branch has won the trophy two years running. Local teams participating are: Rotary Club of Georgetown, Salon 51 (on Main St.), Town of Halton Hills offices and Globe Musical Productions (sponsored by Fraser Direct). Although all team positions are filled, you can still enjoy the event by coming out to cheer on the players and participate in the Milton Lions Audience Play-a-Long Bee. Audience tickets are $30 and include a meal. MacDonald reminds Bee fans to buy their tickets early as space is limited.
