Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 13 ENTERTAINMENT Young sisters are featured in Bach Chorale's Gala Concert LYNNE BAILLIE Georgetown Bach Chorale The Georgetown Bach Chorale's Gala Concert promises to be a spectacular one and a fitting end to a stellar season. The choir will be performing with a chamber orchestra and, for this concert, two harpsichords. The concert will take place on Saturday, May 5, 8 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, Georgetown and be repeated on Sunday, May 6, 3 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, Caledon East. The concert will open with Handel's coronation anthem, The King Shall Rejoice, one of four written for the coronation of King George II in the early 1700s. At least one has been performed at every British coronation since. Following will be a combination of choral and orchestral works, including Bach's majestic Cantata No. 80 Ein Feste Berg and Pachelbel's famous Canon in D, one of the most widely recognized pieces of baroque music. It's difficult for young people to find an opportunity to perform in front of an audience and display their considerable accomplishments. This year the Chorale has been pleased to be able to provide a forum for up-and-coming local young musicians. At the Advent and Good Friday concerts 17-year-old Matthew Pope played the baroque organ to accompany the choir and orchestra. Featured in this concert are Hannah and Marina Manierka (ages 14 and 11 respectively) who will play Bach's Concerto for Two Harpsichords and Strings. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Foodstuffs and The Freckled Lion in Georgetown or by calling 905-877-8321. Tickets will also be available at the door and further information can be found at www.georgetownbachchorale.com. Many of these young people intend to pursue careers in music or musical theatre. Joanna Fraser, Merideth Lawlor, Maeve Sharkey and Martha Zavitz have all been regular performers at Globe Productions. Sarah Alderman, Megan Collie, Katherine Watson, and Leanne Balogh have come up through the ranks of the Georgetown Children's Chorus, as well as studying privately. Martha Zavitz and Nicole Cutting, students of Lisa Timney, are both going to be attending the Randolph School for Performing Arts in Toronto this fall. Travis Paul and Alex Fraser will perform songs from Les Miserables, Phantom and Man of LaMancha. These talented young people will be singing solos and duets from various Broadway hits. Songs from classic Broadway musicals (Guys N Dolls, West Side Story), smash hits from the 90's (Les Miserables, Ragtime, Miss Saigon, Phantom) and recent Broadway hits (Hairspray, Rent and Wicked) will be performed.
