16 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 ArtsWeek 2007 Acoustic Extravaganza features local musicians Halton Hills ArtsWeek presents an exciting weekend of fun and creativity in Glen Williams, called Art in the Glen. There will be 50 visual artists displaying and selling art from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. The Art in the Glen weekend will also feature some wonderful performing artists as well. The opening event is an Acoustic Extravaganza of live music to be held at St. Alban's Church Hall in Glen Williams on Friday, May 4. The licensed evening features well known local artists, including recording artists Don Ablett and Brent Cooper. Known as Riverbend, Ablett and Cooper weave musical magic through intricate fingerstyle guitar playing and crisp harmonies. Second Wind, a trio of female artists who are known for precise vocal harmonies, accompanied by a wide variety of instruments. Their sound is compared to The Dixie Chicks, with Wendi Hunter (guitar, banjo, celtic drum), Suzanne Hnatiw (fiddle) and Sharon Bieck-Shangrow (guitar, mandolin) combining a selection of original songs as well as wonderful covers of well known tunes. Closing out the entertainment will John Sommer Juried Art Show winners At ArtsWeek's John Sommer Juried Art Show awards presentation Thursday night in the Gallery at Halton Hills Cultural Centre, award winners were honoured in various categories. Recipients included, (from left) David Ticknor, People's Choice Award; Denise Keats, Artcast Prize for best three-dimensional work; Gretchen Hamilton-Day, Curry's Prize for best watercolour; Carol-Ann Michaelson, Pottery Supply House Prize for best ceramic work; Kim deBruyn, Halton Hills TD Canada Trust Award for Excellence; Marg Peter, Jurors' Choice Award; and Sonja Gabalis-Mortimer, Jurors' Choice Award. Craig Campbell was also honoured with the Jurors' Choice Award, but was not present. Photo by Ted Brown be Kirk Gabel, well known locally for his guitar mastery and vocals with the Glen Band. Gabel is an accomplished musician who is at home equally with rocky blues and tender ballads. During the fall of 2006, he attended The Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School basic training in St. Jean, Quebec where he won the Commandant's Trophy (top student) and the Canadian Legion Trophy (best comradeship). On April 27, 2007, Pte. Wood completed infantry training in Meaford and has now been posted to the 3rd battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment in Petawawa, Ontario.
