Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 2, 2007 5 Silent Walk set for evening Youths to pay tribute to vets Approximately 1,100 area school children will pay tribute to local war veterans tomorrow (Thursday) in Georgetown and Glen Williams by taking part in the fifth annual Candlelight Tributes procession. Beginning at 10 a.m. in Georgetown and 1 p.m. in Glen Williams, students will walk in a quiet and respectful procession, accompanied by a piper, to the respective cenotaphs where they will place a lit candle in a symbolic "passing of the torch of remembrance". The students will also get the chance to personally thank the veterans with a handshake or a hug. The candlelight ceremony follows the practice school children in Holten, The Netherlands, began many years ago. More than 1,300 Canadian soldiers are buried in the Holten Canadian War Cemetery and every May 4 (Holland's Remembrance Day) local school children place flowers on all the graves. Local residents are invited to join tomorrow's Silent Walk at 6:30 p.m. The procession will leave from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 on Mill Street at 7 p.m. and will walk to Remembrance Park. After the placing of candles, participants can meet with the veterans at the legion. Candles are available at Young's Pharmacy, Bergsma's Decorating and at North Star Dry Cleaners for those taking part in the Silent Walk. Money collected will be used to buy candles for the students and to cover the cost of buses. For more information on the tribute contact Bob McNeilly at 905-877-4991. Do you suffer from SLEEP APNEA?
