Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 4, 2007 27 SCHOOL NEWS Stewarttown student sells air KATIE FRASER Stewarttown School In just one day inspired youngsters raised over $1,100 for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. The Grade 6 students at Stewarttown Middle School recently completed a Social Studies Unit on the human rights of women and children in Afghanistan. After learning about the lack of human rights during the years of Taliban control and the current struggle to maintain and increase human rights, especially for women and children, the Grade 6 students were scandalized by the unfairness of this situation and suggested that they immediately find a way to help. The result was that, at the children's request, their teachers co-ordinated a fullday Human Rights Fair which took place on April 16. The Human Rights Fair involved 150 Grade 6 students. Some took action by raising awareness through posters, flyers, pamphlets, writing rap songs, and writing letters to the President of Afghanistan. Others collected much needed resources such as school supplies, clothing, and more. Many students set up bake sales, raffles/draws, in order to raise funds to support this cause. One innovative student's fundraising idea was to charge students to breathe the air in the space over his desk at the fair. He managed to get 12 customers. All the profits will go directly to aiding those in Afghanistan who are in need. These Grade 6 students proved that amazing things can be achieved with enthusiasm! The science guy Joe Burke, Grade 7 student at Georgetown District Christian School, shows his science fair project, Is the Grass Really Greener, which won first prize in the Physical Science division at the provincial competition hosted by Redeemer University in Ancaster. His project, which proved the energy efficiency of growing green roofs instead of using traditional asphalt ones, was in competition with 200 other Ontario students. Tom Corlett and Aaron Postma, also from GDCS performed extremely well bringing home two first place ribbons.
