22 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 11, 2007 Acton Seniors Centre to hold Spring Bazaar tomorrow JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The Spring Bazaar is on Saturday, May 12. Please come out and support us. All donations of crafts, baking, plants etc. can be brought to the centre on Friday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday morning, 8-10 a.m. The New Members tea was attended by 30 new members and they enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Margaret Dodgson. As usual she excelled herself, and everyone enjoyed the beef stew, chicken pot-pie, a variety of breads and fresh fruit for dessert. Various board members gave a little insight on what their various committees are involved in, and the feedback was great. The next social dinner will have an Italian theme, Festivita dell'Italia and will be held on Friday, May 25. On the menu is Caesar salad, lasagna, garlic bread, and tortufu Italian ice cream with biscotti cookies. The Guelph Italian folk dance troupe will entertain us. The meal is at 6 p.m. and the doors open at 5:45 p.m. The dinner is open to members and their guests only. We have some very energetic members at the centre and three of them participated in the World Wild Life Climb at the CN Tower on April 28. Heinz Rusche (our 65-year-old fitness instructor) had an excellent time of 17 minutes and 26 seconds. Victor Bissonette (66 years young) made the climb in 22 minutes and 34 seconds and Carmen Bissonette finished in 50 minutes and 49 seconds. Heinz tells me he completed a four-hour hike the next day. Congratulations to you all. On May 22, Kimmel of Canada Safety Products (walk-in baths, safety rails etc.) will make a presentation at 2 p.m. Come and hear them and learn how to protect yourselves. As we age we have to consider different options to keep us safe in our homes and this sounds like an excellent first step. Did you know that your present bath tub can be converted with a Walk-Thru insert? Eileen Dix is going to step down from co-ordinating the line dancing in September. Is there anyone out there who would like to take over? It doesn't involve too much time, and should be one of the people who intend to line dance again in September. The person whose name was drawn the previous week in the Friday weekly 50/50 had not put her loonie in the box or her name on the list so she wasn't eligible to win. This week's 50/50 winner was one of our regular bingo players Marg Spears, so she was here when I drew her name. Congratulations Marg! Georgetown Seniors to learn tips to avoid identity theft and scams FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre I feel the warmth of the sun! My soul is revitalized! Life is good again! What a busy time at the Centre the last two weeks. It began with the fashion show on Monday, April 30. A great way to end the month and welcome in the sunny weather of spring. The day was beautiful as the models strutted their fashions amongst the crowd giving us an opportunity for a closer look. All of this included door prizes and lunch. Later the guests were jammed into change rooms trying on the clothes and then directly to the pay table. Look for these smartly dressed women around town About 50 people turned up for the dance on Saturday, May 3rd. By all accounts all had a swingin' good time dancing to the Seniors' Band. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one for I understand there will be more. Once more June Gilson and her kitchen group prepared a delicious lunch on Tuesday, May 8. Some people forgot that lunches are now served at 12 noon. In the fall we will be buying our lunch tickets in advance. The ladies from "Sunset Lodge" presented their version of the poem "The Garden". The audience had an opportunity to see some new fashions for the garden. Grant, the Travel man, has returned to his desk. A big thank you to Ruth and everyone else who managed to step in and take over during his absence. Recently we have heard a great deal on the radio and TV about Identity Theft, Frauds, and Scams. Maybe you even know someone this has happened to. You will want to come out to the Centre on Monday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. To hear Constable Jackie Brennan talk to these topics. This is provided by the S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law enforcement Together) and is open to members of the public. Knowledge makes us powerful. Is that box of unwanted "Things" for the Yard Sale growing? Remember the date is Saturday, May 26. Bring them to the Centre on the Friday. The sale will go between 8 a.m. and noon. Your unwanted items may be someone else's treasure. As well as being able to buy these treasures at unheard of prices you will be able to purchase back bacon on a bun. Ummmm! That sounds good. All the proceeds benefit the Centre. Last but not least! A very happy birthday to Sherry. Shhhhh! Don't tell anybody but it is her BIG FIVE O!. Imagine! A half century old!. Can you remember that far back? A reminder; the Centre will be closed Monday, May 21st for the Victoria Day holiday. Little Johnny asked his grandmother how old she was. Grandma replied, "39 and holding."
