Three-part seminar to focus on `knowing when to downsize' CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Links2Care is presenting a three-part series on Knowing When It's Time to Downsize. The series is free. Three consecutive sessions will be held on June 7, 14, and 21, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Acton Fire Hall, 21 Churchill Rd. S. Attend all three or just choose one. "The unique thing of all three sessions is that we will have someone, a senior, who has gone through this process and they can tell their story," said Terri Forbes, Links2Care seniors co-ordinator. Special guests in the first session include a real estate agent with buying and selling tips, a representative from Harmonious Spaces discussing on how to organize and stage your home to get a better selling price, and a representative from the Seniors Transition Services on moving and packing tips. Special to this session will be a speaker from Halton Geriatric Outreach who will talk about the emotional side of downsizing and how to deal with it in a healthy way. The second session includes a TD Bank financial advisor providing information on services for seniors, a lawyer, and a Halton Regional Police Elder Services police officer who will talk about frauds and scams that seniors should keep an eye out for. The third session includes information about supportive housing and rent gearedto-income housing. Specialists include representatives from ESAC (Elderly Services Advisory Committee) and HATCH (Halton Access to Community Housing). Forbes said while the event is directed at seniors who are in the process of downsizing or thinking of doing so in the future, family members may also benefit. Often, she said, family members become involved in the downsizing decision-making process and knowing the services available to seniors in the community, would make the process so much easier for everyone. All sessions include a free lunch and door prizes. Reserve your seat by calling Forbes, 519853-3310, by Friday, May 25. Acton Seniors Centre seeks donations for June garage sale JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Don't forget the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre will be closed on Monday, May 21 when we celebrate Victoria Day. The Spring Bazaar was its usual great success and the wheel barrow full of spring items was won by Natalie Hayward, and Holly Steane won the 50/50 draw. It's great to see so many people working together to make a success of everything from the crafts and baking to the lunch. A lot of hard work and planning goes into everything. Congratulations everyone. If you are caregiver for someone who is a little unsteady on their feet or you are looking towards the day when you might need a little help to enable you to remain in your home, the presentation by Kimmel of Canda on safety products (walk-in baths, safety rails etc) is something you should try to attend on May 22, at 2 p.m. Downsizing or moving? We have a garage sale on June 9. We would be happy to take any saleable donations as long as they are in good condition. For more infomation, call the centre, 519-853-5951. If you have a problem getting the articles to the centre, Joanne Bissonnette will try to arange transportation. On Sunday, May 27, we will be working with the Acton Kinettes at their community brunch. It is always an excellent brunch and it's a great way to meet old friends or neighbours. You might event meet some of the new people that have recently moved into the Acton area and you can give them a warm Acton welcome.
