Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 18, 2007 3 Plans for new school altered LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The Halton District School Board's plans for a new school in Georgetown South have changed. The board now intends to build a new 550student elementary school on Danby Rd., west of Mountainview Rd., to open for September 2008, and put on hold building an elementary school on the east side of Mountainview Rd. behind Maple Creek Park because the site is not serviced or ready for immediate construction. HDSB has also cancelled the construction of a 10-classroom porta-pak at Silver Creek Public School. Last April, the east side school, which was slated to open in September 2008, was the board's preferred location for a new school in south Georgetown. At that time the board's desire was to build only one new school in that area-- on the east side-- because it was felt two west side schools (existing Silver Creek Public and the new school on Danby Rd.) would result in an imbalance of schools in the community. But Wards 3/4 HDSB trustee and board chair Gillian Tuck Kutarna said yesterday (Thursday) that changed with the announcement in the recent provincial budget that the Ministry of Education was dropping its criteria for funding for new schools from 90 per cent enrolment at opening to 80 per cent. Tuck Kutarna said that was "exactly the flexibility" the board was looking for to allow it to seek funding for two new elementary schools in Georgetown South. "The board still acknowledges the need for a new school on the east side of Mountainview," said Tuck Kutarna. "However, that school is scheduled to go in the middle of a subdivision which has not yet been constructed. It only makes sense to wait for the neighbourhood around the school to be built up first." She stressed the board is still committed to building that east side school. The decision to cancel the porta-pak at Silver Creek was made because, with the planned construction of the new west side school, it was considered unnecessary. "With a price tag of close to $2 million, and the fact that our board has never moved a portapak, adding a 10-classroom porta-pak to Silver Creek was not the best option at this time," said Tuck Kutarna. "It would have amounted to a permanent addition, increasing the capacity of the school from approximately 650 to 900 students, yet the gym, library, staff room, music room, playground and all other features of the school would stay the same size. We would still have kids being bused and in portables. It didn't make sense, especially when we know the population of Georgetown South will increase. We need to be ready for that growth, with permanent, not temporary, solutions." Tuck Kutarna said with the opportunity to build the new school west of Mountainview Rd. "comes the opportunity to build it right." The HDSB has directed its staff to explore the feasibility of building the school to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Tuck Kutarna, a strong proponent of LEED, is really excited about the prospect of the Georgetown school being built to "green" standards. A discussion about the implications of constructing the school to a LEED standard and what that might cost are expected to be discussed at a special board meeting of the HDSB Wednesday (May 23), 7 p.m. at the JW Singleton Education Centre at 2050 Guelph Line, Burlington. The meeting is open to the public. Heritage Decks Ltd. Heritage Decks specializes in the design and construction of custom cedar decks and built-in spas.
