Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 25, 2007 21 SPORTS & LEISURE Rebels capture Ontario Reverse Sixes co-ed title EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The Georgetown Rebels put together their first-ever Reverse Sixes co-ed senior volleyball team this spring and have emerged as provincial champions after winning a 12-team invitational tournament this week at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School in Scarborough. Co-ed Reverse Sixes is a relatively new sport at high schools in the Greater Toronto Area but is gaining popularity, Rebels' coach Kyle Stewart said. Each team puts three girls and three boys on the court, with the boys restricted to backcourt attacks and no blocking, with the girls stationed around the net, using alternate servers. Despite having little game experience with that version of volleyball, the Rebels lost just one match out of 16 from the three tournaments they entered, losing in the semifinals at Monarch Park in Toronto. They took top spot at the Vaughan Mills event before cruising through to the championship of the provincials. Facing Eden High School of St. Catharines in the final, Georgetown's seniors dropped their first set in a 33-35 thriller, then rallied to win 25-13 and 15-13 to secure the Provincial Cup. "To be honest we never really practised that much, so to go into a tournament that had players with lots of OFSAA experience and even a couple of national team members and be as dominant as they were is pretty amazing," said Stewart. "We'd love to do it again next year and hopefully we can start up a high school league in Halton because it's a great form of the game." Stewart added that the backcourt attacks from Ricky Davids left spectators awestruck and setter Matt Barker provided Joanna Meltzer, Jessica Partridge and Meghan Shantz with many scoring opportunities. Cameron Gillmoure and Devin Rattie helped bolster the Rebel offence. Georgetown advanced to the second round of the Division II playoffs with a 29-5 win over the Jaguars, as Spencer Troop scored three tries and Donnie McKenzie added two more. Ovenden's three-round total of 232 was 14 strokes behind individual champ Mike Young of Oakville-Trafalgar, which won the overall team title. GDHS placed fourth. Candice Swartz of Christ the King shot a 94 on Tuesday to place second in the girls' draw and Jaguar teammate Amanda Payne was fourth at 102. CtK's Andrew Albrecht tied for fourth at the Glen Abbey event with a 79 and finished up 11th over 54 holes of play. Georgetown's Adam Salisbury placed seventh overall, with Andrew Tressel and Zach Woolford of Acton finishing in a tie for 12th at 248 to help the Bearcats to sixth in the team standings. teams were shut out on Wednesday in their Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference qualifiers against Hamiltonarea teams. Christ the King's Jaguars were edged 1-0 at Cardinal Newman, while Acton's Bearcats were defeated 8-0 by Bishop Tonnos.
