Acton/Georgetown, Friday, June 8, 2007 13 Police to sponsor Special Friends Day Sunday at Museum DAVID LEA Special to The IFP The Halton Regional Police Services (HRPS) Board is again sponsoring Special Friends Day on Sunday, June 10. Board members recently approved the $2,500 sponsorship. "Special Friends Day is an HRPS-sponsored community event that provides an opportunity for physically and developmentally challenged individuals and their families to come together with members and friends of the Halton Police for a day of fun-filled activities," said Jim Watson, Director of the board's Financial Planning and Asset Management. Watson represented the Special Friends Organizing Committee at the meeting. "The day's activities include a parade, music, carnival games, crafts, sporting activities and special musical guests. Also on display are Emergency Services and their equipment including the OPP, RCMP, local fire and EMS." The HRPS has been a supporter of Special Friends Day since 1994, not only making financial contributions, but also manpower contributions with volunteers from police, fire, ambulance and community partners running all the events. Local restaurants are also chipping in with donations of food for the event being made by Kelsey's and Montana's. This year's Special Friends Day will take place on at the County Heritage Park and Museum in Milton. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. By Lois Fraser "Life's too short" is a common expression that we say when we just want to have fun. It's the reason why many of you have signed up for Homecoming 2007 from July 27-29. You are right. It's going to be an outstanding party! Come and celebrate our town, even if you didn't grow up here. If you feel connected to Georgetown, we want you there. "Life's too short"- It's also something we say when we are trying to get our priorities straight. Like, should I spend the money and fly home this July to visit my hometown? Clearly, many are choosing to come home. People are flying in from 14 different U.S. states, seven provinces (hmm...surely somebody from Georgetown also went to live in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Newfoundland right?). We have folks flying home from Yellowknife and Australia. So if you are local and haven't signed up yet, please do so. People are coming a long way to see you. On a personal and very sad note, a few months ago, 18 of my Grade 8 buddies from Chapel Street School came together to say hello and to reminisce about the good old days. What a great time we had! One of the attendees was Guy Hennessy, a really nice fellow who sadly passed away last week from a sudden heart attack at age 53. We are going to miss him. Like we often say..."Life's too short". Don't miss this opportunity. Come out to Homecoming and say hello to the folks you remember best (and even those who you had, up until this point, completely forgotten about). You'll be glad that you did.
