Photos by Ron Kuzyk Local golfers tops in qualifier Local residents Ryan Thomson and Ryan Putnam took top spot in their respective age groups at the Nike Golf Junior Championship/Stephen Ames Cup Qualifier last weekend in a Canadian Junior Golf Association event held at Horseshoe Resort near Barrie. The 18-year old Putnam carded rounds of 72 and 73 to finish at one over par for the boys' 17-19 division, nine shots ahead of the runner-up. "I putted well (Sunday)," the North Halton Golf & Country Club member said. "Overall I'm pretty happy with the way I played." Thomson used a final-round 75 to come back and grab first place in the boys' 14-16 age category, two shots up on second spot with a 36-hole score of 156. "My putting wasn't as strong as I would have liked," said Thomson, 16. "I was really working on my mental game today, trying not to let the bad shots get me down." Adam Putnam of Georgetown finished up with 177 in the 14-16 age group at Horseshoe, placing in a tie for 30th. Another local golfer, Samantha Spencer, was fourth in the girls' 10-12 age category at the CJGA's Team Canada East qualifier for the U.S. Kids World Golf Championship on Sunday at the Foxwood Golf Club near Kitchener and is awaiting word on whether she'll advance to the next stage. Spencer was the top 11-year-old finisher at the qualifier, shooting a 98 on the day. Approximately 30 horse and rider combinations from across Ontario took part in the dressage and stadium jumping from the beginner to intermediate levels.
