Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 27, 2007 9 Acton High has 93 per cent success rate Georgetown schools below board literacy test average Georgetown's two high schools were at or above the provincial average based on recently released test results, however the percentage of Grade 10 students who successfully passed the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test was slightly below the average for the Halton school boards. The Education Quality and Accountability Office reports that Georgetown District High School's pass rate reached 84 per cent, equal to the average for students province-wide. But that figure was one of the lowest of the 23 high schools in the region as the Halton public board's average sits at 90 per cent. Eighty-eight per cent of Christ the King's Grade 10 students successfully passed the March 2007 OSSLT-- just one percentage point under the Halton Catholic board average. Acton District High School's test results, meanwhile, had a 93 per cent success rate in demonstrating reading comprehension and writing skills. "The success rate for students enrolled in academic English courses was more than 97 per cent," said Suzanne Moffatt, Superintendent of Education (Program Services) with the Halton District School Board. "Schools will provide students who were not successful with opportunities for further remediation through a Grade 10 literacy skills course, additional literacy instruction in their core English classes, after-school and lunchtime literacy support and cross-curricular literacy coaching, We will not be satisfied until all of our students achieve a high level of literacy." The OSSLT is compulsory for Grade 10s and passing it is a prerequisite for graduation in Ontario, although the test can be rewritten in Grades 11 and 12. Students may also enrol in a Grade 12 literacy course as an alternative to earn their diploma. Over the past five years, the overall percentage of students passing the test in the Halton public board has risen to 90 per cent from 80, while the Halton Catholic board's average has jumped to an 89 per cent success rate from 80 in Oct. 2002. The HCDSB's 2007 results indicate a three per cent decrease from the March 2006 achievement of 92 per cent. "We will address this challenge by focusing our resources to the areas identified in the results of this year's assessment," confirmed Lou Piovesan, director of education for the HCDSB. "The assessment indicates that the results of our Applied program students require significant improvement. The Halton Catholic District School Board will direct its energies and resources to achieve improved outcomes for our Applied program students." For the first time, the EQAO has made the complete test results available to the public. Visit the website www.eqao.com.
