4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, July 18, 2007 Local motorcyclist loses leg A 38-year-old Georgetown motorcyclist lost his leg in a horrific crash on Kennedy Road at Queen Street in Brampton Friday afternoon (July 13). The victim is expected to survive, but is in serious condition in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. He suffered severe injuries to his other leg, according to Peel Police. He was riding a motorcycle south on Kennedy, approaching Queen, when he collided with a car at 3:45 p.m. No one else was injured, police report. Police said the victim's family requested that his name not be released. The crash is still under investigation. Police have several witnesses, but are looking for more. Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Collision Bureau at 905-453-3311. Youth group POSSE appeals to Region for funding help Money from Halton's coffers could help keep a local youth outreach group's doors open next year. At its recent meeting, Regional council approved considering a purchase of service agreement with Peer Outreach Support Services and Education (POSSE) as part of the 2008 budget process, meaning it would provide much-needed funds for the group. POSSE, a youth-driven harm reduction and human rights initiative serving north Halton, is expected to run out of money and options for funding in March 2008 and has turned to the Region for help. The organization needs about $125,000 a year to keep operating, with that number going up to around $300,000 if its services were expanded into south Halton. Preliminary 2008 budget work is already under way at the Region and will wrap up in December when the finalized budget is considered by committee and council. Dunking for a cause Gerrie Electric employee Dave Frost got a soaking as he took his turn in the dunk tank at the recent Gerrie Electric Trade Show and barbecue held in the courtyard at Georgetown Hospital. Gerrie Electric organized the event, inviting suppliers to join in, purchasing a spot at the trade show, enjoying the barbecue (with food donated by various supermarkets in town), and holding a silent auction, with all proceeds going to Georgetown Hospital Foundation.
