34 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, July 20, 2007 Wal-Mart and TerraCycle join forces to recycle bottles Wal-Mart Canada Corp. has enlisted the more than 25,000 associates working in its 93 Ontario stores to collect used 20-ounce soda bottles to help raise funds to improve green space in Canadian school yards. For every bottle collected by WalMart associates, TerraCycle Inc. will donate five cents to the Learning Grounds program operated by Evergreen, a non-profit organization that helps to bring natural spaces to urban areas. The program adds beauty and nature to cities and promotes community action to help the environment. The Sargent Rd. Boulevard Garden at HOPE School and the Willow Park Ecology Centre are some of the projects that Evergreen has worked on in order to create naturalized common and learning grounds. Bottles collected in associate lounges will also be used to package TerraCycle's all-natural, worm-poop plant foods, sold at Wal-Mart. "This program has more benefits than we can count," said John Lawrence, Wal-Mart Canada's director of corporate social responsibility. "It eliminates waste, educates our associates, supports school-yard greening, promotes our environmental partner Evergreen, fits our focus on sustainability, and provides packaging for the zero-footprint TerraCycle products we've proudly stocked for years." In just the few short weeks TerraCycle's Bottle Brigade' program has been in effect, the Wal-Mart in Georgetown has successfully collected over 1,000 bottles. Last month, the Georgetown Wal-Mart was presented with a cheque by a representative from TerraCycle for their collection.
