After 26 months of planning and 36 full committee meetings, organizers were proud and satisfied with a grand turnout. "We had 2,200 registers on the Friday night. It's all been a huge success," said Lois Fraser, co-chair of the Homecoming Committee. "The whole event was basically a sell-out." At the Meet & Mingle (wine and cheese party) at Mold-Masters SportsPlex on Friday organizers estimated a turnout of 1,800. The Homecoming Maple Lodge barbecue saw a guest list that ran more than 1,000-- and those numbers only include those who registered. "A lot of people didn't register but still participated in all the other activities," said Fraser. The number of participants at the various events throughout the weekend wasn't the only element of a successful weekend. "There's just no reservation at all. It's not just a `Hi, I haven't seen you in a while,'" said Fraser. "There are people jumping up and down and arms flying around each other for big hugs. So many smiles. Everyone is having such a great time." Only 30 minutes after the event kicked off on Friday, Don Fendley, who originally came up with the idea for a homecoming, said, "I've seen about 20 people that I haven't seen in 35 years. If nothing else, it was worth all the work." The hard work was not only satisfying to the committee members but to all those in hope of reuniting with a long lost friend, or two. William Leslie and Harry Vandervoort had never met before bumping into each other in a decade room at Georgetown District High School Saturday afternoon. After chatting about their own memories of Georgetown they discovered just how closely they were connected. "When my family came here from Holland when I was a boy, we rented a house on Main Street," said Vandervoort. "It turns out it was (Leslie's) family who had rented it to us.
