Acton/Georgetown, Friday, August 3, 2007 23 Community Calendar Friday, August 3 Blind draw darts: Branch 120 Georgetown Legion is holding Blind Draw Darts every Friday night at the branch, 127 Mill St. Anyone with darts is welcome to come out and have fun starting at 7 p.m. Music and food are a great combination Gerry is writing today. I love Friday nights, especially if I'm at home with a blank agenda for the evening. I seldom listen to the radio, but you can bet I listen to AM740 starting at 5 p.m. on Friday nights for 50's and 60's Oldies but Goldies and Prime Time Bandstand. You see, although I may be dating myself, this was the music of my youth and my generation-- the music of my life. A couple of Fridays ago, we had a friend over for a simple dinner of hotdogs and corn on the cob. He too, loves this music. What a treat, when at 9:30 p.m., there was a segment on songs related to food-- in the midst of our scrabble game, I grabbed the scoresheet and the pen and began to make notes as I realized here was a story in the making. What a fun half hour we had! For those of you who remember these songs, enjoy the trip through time with me, and, can you remember the artists? Mashed Potato Cherry Pie Blueberry Hill Candy Man Lollipop Peanut Butter Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme Strawberry Fields Tequilla Green Onions Watermelon Man Margaritaville Sugar Shack Banana Boat Song Brandy Cinnamon Tutti Frutti Sugar Sugar The first song I can remember in the '50's food relationship theme was Perry Como's That's Amore, with the line "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie". We had never heard of a pizza pie back then; now it has become a staple in most diets. Bill Haley and the Comets, also in the Lori Gysel & Gerry Kentner 50's, began the rock 'n roll generation with Shake, Rattle and Roll, with the line "Get out in that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans". I am sure there are many more I have missed, so enjoy trying to remember some more on your own. I can just hear your teenage children today when they hear of these titles. I don't think the top bands of today are singing the praises of peanut Saturday, August 4 Blood donor clinic: Canadian Blood Services blood donor clinic will be held at the Nirankari Mission, 2774 Bovaird Drive West, Norval, 12-4 p.m. Canadian Blood Services urges South-east Asian residents to attend. Continued on pg. 30 butter or green onions! But what a walk down memory lane for us. The only thing wrong with Friday nights is that they don't end until Saturday morning sometime! I just leave the radio on when I go to bed and I'm bebopping all night long-- just one more song! By the way, speaking of food, last week I saw the new Disney's Pixar movie Ratatouille. It's the story of a rat named Remy who want to become a chef. This charming animation is definitely not only for children. It is a warm, funny comedy that takes place in a kitchen, my favourite room in the house. Go see it and enjoy! In the meantime, Lori and I will see if we can cook up a Ratatouille recipe for you! Have fun and keep cooking!
