"That might not help," says Jan Heck, president of Miele Canada, a world leader in innovative appliance designs. "Our households are known to collect almost as many allergens as the great outdoors. Furthermore, most of these irritants are unseen, but they are right there on the floor." Household floors harbour dust, pet dander, pollen, and mould spores, not to mention residue from cleaning products, cigarette smoke, kitchen grease, and more. Here are a few Miele tips (miele.ca) to help put an end to all the sneezing, congestion, and red eyes this spring: · Go Carpet Free. The warmth and comfort of carpet is hard to resist, especially for apartment dwellers that count on it for muffling noise. If you must have carpet, choose the lowest pile available. Wherever possible however, replace carpet with hardwood, vinyl or tile floors, then scatter machine-washable cotton rugs for warmth. · Vacuum faithfully. All floors and coverings should be vacuumed to control and eliminate allergen particles including dust, pollen and mould spores. Here's the good news: the right vacuum cleaner will reduce the minute particles that trigger allergic reactions.. Insist, says Miele, on these three main components working together: a powerful motor to dig up microscopic particles; absolute, airtight construction to prevent even the tiniest particles from escaping; plus an ultra high-performance filter system. The most effective system is a sequence of filters: the dustbag, the motor filter, and the all-important, HEPA filter. The latter is so fine it traps 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. · Clean carpets professionally. Invest in steam cleaning or dry cleaning, every six months. Make sure the carpet is dried thoroughly after cleaning to avoid mould. Avoid do-it-yourself shampoos. The residue could be an allergy irritant. · No shoes. Prevent allergens, like grass, pollen, pesticides, and mould spores from entering your home by establishing a "no shoes" policy. It's not easy to ask guests to remove their shoes, but they'll be happy to oblige if they know you have allergies.
