6 Parenting Section, Friday, August 10, 2007 YOU AND YOUR PET Callie is a little girl with a big, big heart Callie, (where do I begin?) is a young female Australian cattle dog/blue heeler, medium sized, with the most beautiful soft, very soft, fur that is a pleasure to stroke. Callie's admission to the shelter left such an impact on the caregiver admitting her and she hasn't stopped grabbing our hearts ever since. Our representative was cleaning kennels and Callie was brought in by a family with two children. The little boy was inside the kennel playing ball with her, the girl was crying and when asked said the dog had to be surrendered because they were moving and could not take Callie with them. The mother was also very emotional and distraught and informed us that their personal circumstances were critical and the dog had to be surrendered although it was a terrible wrench for them. Callie felt the emotion of the moment, her family was overwhelmed with grief and the son was sobbing and shaking uncontrollably. Our worker will never forget the look on Callie's face as they walked away stricken with the circumstances they found themselves in. Callie has proven she is a little girl with a big heart, a true role model for the female species of any kind, though obviously grieving she just picked herself up, made the best of her circumstances and didn't look back because if she did so her heart would break. should not be a cause for concern in any way. Callie is seldom seen without her ball-- always ready and waiting-- carried in her mouth with a tilt of the head saying "let's play". David Beckham look out, because Callie is very adept with a soccer ball! Water is an inspiration and a stimulant to her-- how she loves the little pool at the shelter. She loves to splash with her front paws, enjoying the cooling spray. No water in the pool? Even a puddle will do-- it's great to splash in. Walking on the trails is a special treat, and when she knows you she will sometimes share a `special kiss". Sweet, loving Callie is a canine who was loved and is in wonderful physical condition, but this little lady definitely had her heart hurt, but even so, is so willing to love again, can you help her find her new family? Everyone at the Shelter is hoping that the right people are reading this, and will arrange a "meet and greet" with this deserving girl. She is waiting at 519-833-2287 for you to come. Submitted by: Judith-Anne Kolu UCHS Volunteer Pet of the Month Callie has had her heart broken but is willing to love again. Call 519-833--2287 to adopt. It is so obvious why we at UCHS want Callie to find a perfect home, one that is familiar with the traits of a heeler, an experienced dog owner who leads an active life where Callie can get ample opportunities for her beloved fetch and ball play. A new owner must realize that herding dogs, when playing, might sometimes in the heat of play or chase "nip". This is not a bite, but rather, just an innate part of their nature. Care and direction by a knowledgeable family would ensure that this was not a problem and Fundraiser aids breast cancer group Petsathome Georgetown recently announced its Paws for the Cause campaign with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). Petsathome will donate 10 per cent from the sale of each reflective paw print lanyard or pink ribbon carbiner to the CBCF. The lanyards sport three raised pink foam paw prints on either side with the clear buckle showing the pink breast cancer ribbon. The pink ribbon carbiner comes with the fun inscription of 'look after your puppies'. The cost of the lanyards is $8.75 (plus tax) while the carbiner sells for $5.75 (plus tax).
