Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, August 15, 2007 9 Partners in recreation Our volunteers and sports organizations have made excellent partners with the Town and we have all benefited from these partnerships. This is one area I wanted to see improved when I was first elected mayor. The Town has been able to expedite many recreation projects totaling more than $300 million, thanks to more than $1 million raised from people who care in our town. In the spring, I told you about the Georgetown Slo Pitch League donating $100,000 towards a new $600,000 lit ball diamond. More recently, the Georgetown Soccer Club and the Georgetown Baseball Association have once again stepped up to the plate with a $5,000 donation towards renovations to Diamond 1 at the Gellert Community Park. A further "in kind" donation from Mark Cootes, Keith Gillert, and others has been received to complete the work. We have seen other fine examples of groups in our community partnering with the Town in bringing forward huge capital recreation projects. The Acton Soccer Association donated $100,000 towards a new $500,000 lit soccer pitch, and the Acton Skateboard Action Park Committee has raised more than $100,000 towards the new $266,000 Three Musketears Skateboard Park. Both the Georgetown and Acton Soccer Associations partnered with the Acton Agricultural Society and the Town in building a beautiful $2 million indoor soccer facility. Also, the new Rotary Park Bandshell was another excellent partnership. ··· Limehouse will be celebrating 150 years (1857-2007) on Saturday, August 25 at the Limehouse Memorial Hall from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Planned events include displays and guided tours. Jean Somerville will speak on the history of Limehouse, and Mark Rowe will conduct short walking tours. On Sunday, August 26 at 9:30 a.m., a church service will be held at the Limehouse Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Cooper officiating. ··· Don Fendley, when you come up with an idea, you come up with a good one! Don came up with the idea of the Georgetown Homecoming 2007. A big round of applause is extended to the organizing committee for bringing us an outstanding and memorable event. People came to Georgetown from near and far to partake in the festivities. From start to finish, it was an exciting weekend. Old friendships were rekindled and are back on track as everyone reconnected by swapping e-mail addresses, home addresses, and telephone numbers. ··· It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of longtime Catholic school board trustee Irene McCauley. Our community is still mourning the recent passing of public school trustee Ethel Gardiner. Both women provided many dedicated years to Halton's education system. ··· On behalf of council, I welcome the following new businesses to Georgetown: Silvercreek Paints, Wild Wings, and Dominion Lending Centres. ··· Keeping it real! I can be reached at 905-873-2601, ext. 2342, or by e-mail at mayor@haltonhills.ca. --Rick Bonnette is the mayor of Halton Hills Local couple riding again for MS Georgetown residents Laurent and Paulette Thibault are gearing up for their 13th year in the RONA MS Bike Tour from Brampton to Waterloo, this weekend. Organized by the MS Society of Canada, this two-day (August 18-19) 190 kilometre tour has become a tradition for the local couple. When they first registered for the event in 1995, the Thibaults saw an opportunity to get involved in something they considered worthwhile which also incorporated their love of cycling. "Thirteen years later, we still love it," says Laurent. "We look forward to this weekend each year-- seeing all the volunteers at the event encouraging us, enjoying how well-organized the tour is, and just being thankful that we are healthy and can ride." The Thibaults have raised $27,000 in donations over the past 13 years. "I guess we have a bit of a friendly rivalry on the amount we raise," says Laurent. As this year's event approaches the couple have approached nearly 200 people to ask for a donation, and are on track to raise $5,000 this year alone. Proceeds of the RONA MS Bike Tours fund research into the cause and cure of multiple sclerosis, as well as provide services for people with MS and their families. Part of what keeps the Thibaults motivated is the number of people they meet who have a family member or friend with MS. "It makes you realize how prevalent multiple sclerosis is," says Laurent. "It seems it is all around us." More information about the RONA MS Bike Tours and opportunities to cycle or volunteer is available at www.msbiketours.com or by calling 1800-268-7582, ext. 3038.
