Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, August 15, 2007 7 Town donates $500 Warriors Day parade set for Saturday to find `morons' who vandalized garden CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Halton Hills council has donated $500 to Crime Stoppers of Halton to help find the culprits who vandalized the Max MacSween Memorial Garden in Rotary Park in Acton. The vandals destroyed the plants and removed a dedication plaque, valued at $700. The garden honoured the late MacSween who was a former Acton Citizen of the Year and active Acton Horticultural Society member. "It's unfortunate these morons with an IQ of less than road kill would do such a thing, not realizing the significance of this garden," said Mayor Rick Bonnette, when announcing the donation at Monday's council meeting. "It's discouraging and disappointing that a thing of beauty-- as Max would say-- was destroyed in such a short period of time." Volunteers have replanted the garden, but the expensive plaque remains missing. Anyone with any information on the vandalism and theft should contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477). The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 120 Georgetown will give their American comrades, Post 40 of Massachusetts, a gun salute after the annual Warriors' Day parade on Saturday (August 18). At Monday's council meeting, Legion president Wade Bond requested an exemption from the Town's bylaw to allow the discharge of firearms, during the ceremony at Remembrance Park, and again outside the Legion, honouring Post 40 members. Blank ammunition will be used. Halton Police and the local neighbourhood have been notified of the two gun salutes. Branch 120 has been hosting the American legion for more than 25 years, and for the last three years has been running the Warriors Day march in Georgetown rather than at the CNE. A barbecue will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the parade and ceremony about 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. The soldiers will march down Market St. to Church St. down Main St. to James St. and up to Remembrance Park. Council approved a motion waiving the noise bylaw allowing the discharge of firearms. Thank you, "Garden Brothers Circus!"
