Acton/Georgetown, Friday, August 17, 2007 13 Two area groups receive funding boost from Trillium Foundation Two area not-for-profit groups are among 30 in Halton and Peel to share in total funding of $2.6 million from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Sustainable Halton Hills, care of Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (POWER), will receive $150,000 over two years to help establish the Sustainable Halton Hills Centre. The shared facility is to be for environmental and community-based groups aiming to advance sustainable community development. Also receiving funding is Terra Cotta Community Centre. The centre will receive $100,000 for structural reinforcements and the construction of a basement under the historic Terra Cotta Community Centre. The construction will improve the safety of the facility and allow for continued use of the centre. "We're ecstatic-- 100,000 bucks is the biggest thing to happen in the history of the Terra Cotta Community Centre," said Ron Budenas, vice-president of The Terra Cotta Community Centre, which is the name of a residents' fundrainsing group. "The idea is that we'll put in new footings, a basement, a kitchen and make it wheelchair accessible. "In fact, it will make the entire facility more accessible to the entire community because, right now, it is so small that it can only be used for small functions." The group is in the midst of a fundraising campaign that seeks to raise more than $300,000 for the renovation of the centre, which was built in 1862, said Budenas. "We're doing fairly well, we've raised, in grants and in-kind gifts, $135,000 from the community and now with the Trillium grant we're at $235,000, so we need another $70,000," he said. According to Budenas the group needs to raise $35,000 before the Trillium cash is released. Through a golf tournament and dinner earlier this month, the group raised $11,000 while the Terra Cotta Inn and Casablanca Cigar Company donated profits from the event to the cause. On Sept. 15 the Tour de Terra Cotta will be held and 250 racers are expected to take part in the Ontario Cycling Association-sanctioned event. Proceeds from the race will go towards the centre. The grants were announced recently by Ontario's Minister of Culture Caroline Di Cocco and were part of new funding for the Ontario Trillium Foundation announced in the provincial government's spring budget. "These grants are a wonderful example of how OTF, by working in partnership with local organizations, makes our community a better place to live for the benefit of us all," said Lindsay Williams, Grant Review Team Chair. School Bus Orientation Day planned for Saturday, Aug. 25 The Halton School Bus Safety Committee, with representatives from both school boards and all bus operators in Halton, is hosting its annual School Bus Orientation Day on Saturday, August 25, starting at 9 a.m. The orientation session will assist parents and first time riders in understanding the importance of school bus safety. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the free sessions, which will feature a classroom presentation on school bus safety, including a special Winnie-the Pooh video and a demonstration on a school bus. School bus company safety officers and bus drivers will talk to the children about safely getting on and off of the bus, proper behaviour on a school bus, crossing the street to get to a waiting bus and overall school bus safety. In addition, a tip sheet on school bus safety, entitled Think! Think! Think Safety! will be distributed. The committee hopes that the orientation sessions will help students and their parents feel more comfortable with the idea of riding a school bus. The sessions begin at 9 a.m. at Acton District High School, (Tyler Transport Ltd.) for Acton area students and at Georgetown District High School, (Laidlaw Transit Ltd.) for Georgetown area students.
