Sports & Leisure, Friday, August 17, 2007 3 Golf roundup Lapointe claims Mid-Amateur crown Winning her sixth Golf Association of Ontario Women's Mid-Amateur title in the past seven years, Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown shot a tournament-best round of 69 on Thursday to add another provincial championship to the Canadian hall-of-famer's collection. Lapointe, 47, completed the 54-hole event held at the Stratford Country Club with a score of four-under-par 212, six shots ahead of runner-up Terrill Samuel from Etobicoke. It's the 11th time since 1995 that the North Halton Golf & Country Club member has won the province's mid-amateur crown. Eagle Ridge Golf Club member Pamela Piotrowski of Milton finished in a tie for 24th this week at +30, while North Halton's Julie Green placed 27th with a +33 total score. At the GAO Senior Men's Amateur Championship in Copetown this week, North Halton member Reg Finlayson ended up tied for 52nd after rounds of 75-79-78. ··· A roller-coaster ride through the match play portion of the Royal Canadian Golf Association's Men's Amateur Championships ended at the quarterfinal stage for Georgetown's Robbie Greenwell Thursday afternoon in Riverside, Sask. The 21-year-old University of Memphis junior won his first three rounds of match play after being seeded 10th out of 64 players thanks to a 72 and 74 in stroke play earlier in the week. Then Greenwell lost to Quebec's Renaud Langevin in the fourth round yesterday 2&1 after going 4 up through the first seven holes, powered by five birdies. Langevin birdied the last two holes for the dramatic comeback win, just as Greenwell had done on Wednesday to New Zealander Brenden Stuart. Fellow North Halton club member Gavin Aldridge didn't make the cutdown to 64 competitors for the match play segment. Bolts fare well Continued from pg. 1 In the Mite boys' (grades 1-2) age group, Thunderbolt Gabe Cabrita, convincingly won the 200m dash and was runner-up in the 100m event. Georgetown teammate Alec Traynor finished second in the 400m race and also reached the 100m final. Other Thunderbolts who participated in the 2007 Ontario Championships included: Courtney Chambers, Jackson Den Elzen, Justin Dool, Josh Kalbhenn, Cole Traynor, Sarah Traynor and Emily Wilk. The Georgetown Thunderbolts Track & Field club was established for athletes in Grades 1-8 in 2005 and is affiliated with the Minor Track Association of Ontario. Jr. A loop to adopt shootout Continued from pg. 1 The OPJHL released its regular season schedule for the new season this week and the Raiders will open at home on Saturday, Sept. 15 against the West Conference-champion Hamilton Red Wings. Georgetown has an exhibition game in Orangeville Friday, Aug. 24 and then will host the Crushers the next night at 7 p.m. The Raiders travel to North York Sunday (Aug. 26) afternoon and have a rematch with the Rangers Thursday, Aug. 30 at the Alcott Arena at 7 p.m. They will also travel to the University of Vermont for the annual Woodchuck Classic tournament Sept. 6-9. ··· At an OPJHL meeting on Wednesday night, the league's general managers voted to implement a threeman shootout for regular-season games if the already-established five minutes of four-on-four overtime doesn't determine a winner. Earlier this summer, the OPJHL's board of governors voted to change the playoff format, reducing the number of teams that make the post-season to 24 from 32 in previous years. The top two teams in each conference in the regular-season standings will receive a first-round bye while the remaining four clubs in the division will play a best-of-5 series in eight days. Andrews strikes gold Kaitlyn Andrews of Georgetown is taking some time off before resuming her studies at a university in Texas after a productive summer in her shot put and discus competitions. She also placed fourth in the discus after a throw measuring 41.17m.
