Exhibition opens today! Back to school supplies for sale! Does all this tell us something? Summer is coming to an end. Many grandparents will be glad when the kids go back to school. Then their babysitting job is over and they can get back and involved in the centre activities again. Kristen and Sherry are busy getting things organized for Open House Week, Sept. 10 to Sept. 14. This will be your opportunity to come out and look us over and try out some of the programs you may be interested in. Tuesday, Sept. 11th of that week will be the barbecue of hot dogs and buttery corn on the cob. Make sure you mark these dates on your busy calendar. A new membership drive is set for Wednesday, Sept. 5th at the Georgetown Market. Drop by and talk to us about the benefits of being a member. We are looking forward to seeing you there and signing you up if you are not all ready a member. On October 10, we will be going to the polls to elect a new provincial government. We will also be asked to cast a vote on a special referendum on electoral reform. It is difficult to make an informed decision if we don't understand what it is all about. On Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., John Daley, a member of the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform, will hold an information session at the Georgetown Senior Centre at 10 a.m. This will be open to the public. I can only state again that it is to your advantage to understand the workings of the new reform before you vote in the upcoming Provincial Election. Some people have approached me with ideas for programs, especially evening ones, for the 55+ still working. Please take your suggestions and ideas to Kristen or Sherry. You can do this by dropping into the Centre between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or better still talk to them by calling 905-877-6444. There is an announcement for a Memoirs Class to take place this fall beginning Friday, Sept. 21 from 9:3 0a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost will be $80 and the instructor is Norah Savage. There is a misconception about "memoirs". This is not an autobiography of your life but a recalling and writing some of the happy, crazy, sad memories of your life. Once on paper you can share these times with you family and friends. It becomes your legacy. Sign up for this class must be done by Friday, Sept 14th. We need eight people. I know I am going to be one so the actual number is down to seven already. Maybe some of the people from Acton would like to join. The Hilltop will be published the week of the 20th. JULIE CONROY Special to The IFP It is nice to see new people coming in to the Acton Seniors Centre to join. Hopefully they will all find something to interest them. Recently we had our monthly Pot Luck lunch, and some people seem to have forgotten the meaning of `pot luck'. It means everyone brings their favourite dish to share with others. There was always a charge if you couldn't for some reason bring (or buy) a dish that week, but I hear that more and more people are opting to pay rather than bring a dish. It means there may not be sufficient food for everyone when too many people choose this option. Please take the time to preferably make, or buy something, if you are coming to the dinners. Thinking of great food, our first social dinner for the fall season will be on September 13. I am sure everyone well be looking forward to what Victor and his crew will be creating in the way of entertainment and food on that day. If you are like me and the brain take a holiday during the hot weather, just of couple of reminders: · Reminding all board members, the monthly board meeting will be on August 22 at 1 p.m. · There will be no shuffleboard on Friday, August 31 as the community hall has a prior booking. Mary asked me to mention the great fall trip on Friday, October 12. You will have lunch at the Viamede Resort, followed by a cruise on the Chippewa 11 replica steamboat. You will have a two-hour boat ride along one of the most beautiful lakes in Ontario and cruise around some of the 1,128 chartered islands of Stoney and Clear Lakes. The trips to see Oklahoma in Stratford and the trip to the Niagara Casino are both full (unless more seats become available). The fundraising committee has been busy at work and has tickets available for both the beautiful handmade queen-size quilt and shams and the lovely picture by Fern Jory. There is a great selection of prizes at the penny sale table behind the reception desk. Spend a little and get a great chance of winning something really lovely. I have discovered since joining the centre that seniors love taking a chance on winning something, whether at the casinos, raffles or the weekly 50/50 draws. The Gals on the Go have recovered from their trip to Mohawk and I noticed a few had big smiles, so they did well at the slots. Even I managed to come out a little ahead at the races, but everyone agreed it was a great evening. The dinner was excellent and the company lots of fun. We even had our group's name on the program and on the board welcoming us. The next planned trip will be to the St. Lawrence Market on Saturday, Sept. 8. Ladies sign up if you are interested. It nice to see the pool table being put to use. It is a little bit of a squeeze when I am trying to use the computer, and I can feel an elbow in my back, but we are being friendly and sharing the space.
