10 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, September 7, 2007 Acton family loses $60,000 Beware scam artists, police warn Halton Regional Police remind local residents to ignore mailings, faxes or e-mail messages that ask for cash advances with the promise of larger financial gains for their cooperation. Numerous complaints have been received by police from citizens in Milton and Halton Hills recently about the "confidence tricks" such as the 419 Nigerian Fraud or employment opportunities that request cash up front but turn out to be scams. An Acton family was victimized for $60,000 while another man from Milton lost $46,000 when he sent funds to a money transfer institution and didn't receive the $26 million promised in the letter sent to his home. "It's the typical scam that's been around for a long time but unfortunately people are still falling for it and for whatever reason this seems to be the most popular time of year for it," said Detective Constable Ken Best of the fraud unit. "At first it looks as though it is simple to contact the person who is requesting the money but they use centralized deposits and are usually five steps away from ever being connected to the letters. It's virtually impossible to track them down." Best suggests checking the phonebusters.com website or contacting the Canadian Anti-Fraud call centre at 1-888-4958501 to check against these scams.
