Please call George TOLL FREE 1-877-632-1281 14 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, September 14, 2007 For someone who has spent countless hours as a com- munity volunteer during his life, Georgetowns Dave Martin has had the favours returned to him in spades over the past few months. The retired sales and manufacturing executive was diag- nosed with lung cancer in 2005 and at the time doctors gave Martin just three months to live, yet his condition has improved significantly since the spring. As well as celebrating his 63rd birthday this Saturday, Martin will be thrilled to send his 32-year-old son Jeff off on Sunday to participate in the 27th-annual Terry Fox Run, a volunteer-driven organization that has raised more than $400 million for cancer research since its inception. What I like about the Terry Fox Run is that its basically all about volunteers, and its something we should all be involved with because of how many people are affected by cancer, said Martin, whose 93-year-old mother Louisa walked in the Dorchester, Ont. event two years ago. You look at all of the cancer fundraisers out there today and you wonder, Where the heck is all the money going? You look at some of these organizations and theres tremen- dous overhead required to operate them. A former longtime Georgetown Minor Hockey Association volunteer and Optimist club member, Martin and wife Barbara, senior director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, have donated their time and money to many cancer research fundraisers, including the Look Good Feel Better program for patients. Martin said his improved health can be attributed in large part to the volunteers from Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills in helping with tasks such as driving to and from Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for treatments. Due to a previous respiratory ailment, Martin still relies on a ventilator to breathe, but credits his steady improve- ment to herbal and holistic treatments of Sho Tai, which uses ancient and Oriental non-invasive medicinal treat- ments, along with frequent visits to hospital. A couple of his doctors are amazed with his progress as the tumour has shrunk in size while Martins energy levels continue to strengthen. (The doctors) were really excited about this news, but only partially as excited as I was, deadpanned Martin. Ive kind of twisted Jeffs arm to run for me on Sunday. One day I would love to see our now 19-month-old granddaughter Cassidy take her dad for a run. This is Jeffs sixth Terry Fox Run, having become involved when Tamara Diardichuk, the Georgetown event co-ordinator, was discovered to have cervical and uterine cancer six years ago. Diardichuk will mark her five-year clear of the disease by shaving her head, along with a couple of other Terry Fox Run participants on Saturday evening. Sundays Georgetown run takes place at the Gellert Recreation Centre from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the Acton event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Acton High Schools track. Visit the website wwwterryfoxrun.org for more info. Jeff Martin (left) limbered up for this Sundays Terry Fox Run in Georgetown at the home of his parents, Barbara and Dave, this week. Dave Martin has lung cancer but has seen encouraging progress in his con- dition over the past few months and hopes to see Jeffs infant daughter, Cassidy, run for cancer research in future years.
