The thermal protector in the motors of these HRV systems, installed in more than 51,000 homes across Ontario, can fail and pose a potential fire hazard to homeowners. Certain models produced and installed between 1991 and 2001, and again between Oct. 2006 and Aug. 2007, are affected. The company Venmar, has identi- fied the following brand names as hav- ing been affected: Venmar Brand - NuTone Venmar AVS Brand - Heil Brand VanEE Brand - York Conformax - Sears Carrier, Bryant - Guardian by Broan Payne - Rheem Brands Day & Night - Ruud-Protech- Weatherking Flair Investigations of two home fires in Burlington in 2006 resulted in con- cerns of Venmar HRVs, said Halton Hills fire department Chief of Operations John Martin. Venmar ini- tiated an upgrade program for affected HRVs installed between 1991 and 2001. He added, recently, the manufac- turer initiated a second upgrade pro- gram for the HRV systems produced between Oct. 2006 and Aug. 2007. Martin said about 10 per cent of the homes with the affected units have been retrofitted under the upgrade program, however that leaves over 51,000 homes at risk of potential fire. Are these units in our community, and if so, how many of our citizens are aware of the potential risk, asked Martin. Homeowners with HRV systems manufactured by Venmar Ventilation Inc. during the above periods should immediately call Venmar at 1-866- 441-4645 or at www.venmar.ca to determine if their unit is affected. Venmar heaters may pose fire hazard
