Then there are a couple of place names Ballinafad and Terra Cotta that most people outside of Halton Hills likely havent heard of. So what are the chances that two local-area residents Jade Kovacevic of Ballinafad and Terra Cottas Nicole Waters are on the Ontario Soccer Associations roster of 25 players who will train throughout the winter in preparation for the 2008 cam- paign? Approximately 3,000 hopefuls were invited to attend tryouts begin- ning at the district level, with a select few progressing to the regional teams and eventually the 25-player provin- cial squad, which will cut seven more names from the list before competing in the national all-star tournament in July. Kovacevic and Waters, both 13, were key players last season for a powerhouse side from Oakville that won its regular-season crown, league cup title and was runner-up in the Ontario Cup competition. Yet the local duo were the only girls from their Oakville team to be selected to the provincial squad, which, coincidentally, is coached by Georgetown South resident Ruben Flores. It doesnt matter where they come from. They have to play well to make the team, but they have defi- nitely shown they have the ability to get there and theyll have to keep working hard at it, said Flores, who moved his family to this area after Halton Hills residents Jade Kovacevic (left) and Nicole Waters have advanced to the final stages of tryouts for Ontarios under-14 girls soccer team. Submitted photo Local duo eye spot on Ontario team playing professionally in Mexico, the U.S. and Italy. I selected them for the OSA Region 2 team because I know them really well and what kind of players they are. Theyre both fast, aggres- sive, determined and have good atti- tudes. Hopefully they can make it to the next level. Its an unbelievable achievement just to make it this far, when you consider the process they must go through. When asked what position they play, both girls chuckled, because that depends on the team theyre playing for. Flores preaches versatili- ty in his four-times-a-week training sessions at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan and will likely revolve his players around the pitch during upcoming exhibition tournaments next month in Buffalo, N.Y., Florida in March and Quebec in April. I usually play left defence for the Ontario team, but I was a forward when I first came to the team, and I play centre midfield for Oakville so, all over the place, said the 13- year-old Waters, a Grade 8 St. Francis of Assisi student. Like Waters, Kovacevic has played in an age group a year older than her birth date and both were members of the Georgetown Mustangs squad that won the presti- gious Robbie International tourney in 2006 and were also Ontario Cup semifinalists. A Stewarttown Public School stu- dent, Kovacevic lines up in midfield or on the left wing, but is as adept with her left foot as she is with the right. An accomplished track and cross-country runner, the Flambor- ough native has had to scale down her extra-curricular activities to meet her commitment to the OSA team. At school Ive had to stop run- ning because Im so busy, but with the soccer we still run and train quite a bit and were outside, even during the winter, said Kovacevic during her two-week holiday layoff. I play a lot during the week and sometimes its nice to get a break, but I never could get tired of just playing with the ball. Both girls expect to return to their Oakville club side this sum- mer. Another Georgetown teen who was a standout for the Mustangs 2006 Robbie champions, Maggie Darling, made it to the regional stage of tryouts for the Ontario under-14 girls team before deciding to con- centrate on other commitments.
