Free Georgetown Pick-Up 905-877-7562 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, January 18, 2008 5 Talks stall with Towns outside workers A 48-year-old Acton man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old Mississauga boy back in 1982. Officers from the Peel Regional Police Special Victims Unit charged the man Friday. At the time of the alleged assault the man was a youth counselor and pastor at St. Brides Church in Clarkson and an out trip director at the Ontario Pioneer Camp in Port Sydney. Police said the assault occurred in Port Sydney. Charged with one count of indecent assault is Garth Stanwyn Bent. Police ask anyone who had dealings with Bent to contact the Special Victims Unit at 905-453-3311 ext. 3460 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Two trucks and tools and equipment valued at about $11,000 were taken from CBM St. Marys Aggregate on Fifth Line sometime late Monday or early Tuesday. A lock on a gate was cut to gain entry to the property and a window was smashed to enter a building where the trucks and equipment were stored. Taken were a 1989 and 1990 Ford pickup. The total value of the vehicles, which didnt have licence plates, was about $600. Also taken was a Honda GX 390 and Champion air compressors, Lincoln gas welder, 100 ft. of welding cables, drills, chainsaw and other items. Halton Police are investigating. Police blotter Acton man charged in 1982 assault Negotiations between the Town of Halton Hills and CUPE Local #73 have stalled, and will require the assistance of a labour conciliator. Town Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Perlin said negotiations were adjourned Wednesday. Union president Andy Garbutt said Thursday that a union vote will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24 to go to a conciliator. If the vote is affirmative, a request will be made to the Ministry of Labour to appoint a conciliator to work on the remaining issues such as salary and benefits. Garbutt said he believes a conciliator will be available right away and he hopes the issues will be resolved fairly quickly. CUPE #73 involves about 42 Towns outside employees, such as snowplow drivers, roads and parks workers, and facility attendants at the are- nas, Civic Centre and Gellert Community Centre. Facility attendants clean and set up the facilities and prepare the ice surfaces and pools. If conciliation is unsuccessful, Perlin said, the workers could be in a position to strike. Under Ontario labour law, workers can be in a strike position 17 days after a no board decision is declared by conciliator.
