Constable Brennan has been a significant contrib- utor to the safety and well being of Haltons elder community. In her talk, she described identity theft tricks that have become possible with todays technol- ogy. Little Old Lady Actors accompanied the consta- ble and used humorous skits to demonstrate various scams that fraudsters perpetrate on the public. Each skit concluded with a suitable response to each scam. Here are some things Const. Brennan discussed: Telemarketing and the Internet are major tools used by criminals to steal identity, banking informa- tion and money. To protect yourself, Just hang up! on telemarketers, and never open e-mails from unknown sources. Delete them. Fraudsters use card readers to decipher personal banking information from the black magnetic strips on the backs of credit cards. Keep cards in a safe place. Protect your PIN number. Posted mail also presents opportunities for theft. If you receive a mailed product marked FREE mark it Return to Sender and post it back. Each CFUW member received a brochure from the Bank of Canada, which detailed the security fea- tures on Canadas bank notes. This is a useful tool to help recognize counterfeit money. It is available at www.bankofcanada.ca. If you suspect that you have been targeted by a scam operation, inform the police immediately. This month Halton Regional Police Service is launching a new helpline specifically for seniors Halton Seniors Helpline, 1-866-457-8252.
