The stores may be closed tomorrow (Saturday) but there is still going to be plenty to do as both Acton and Glen Williams communities host Canada Day parties. The day gets under way in Glen Williams at 8 a.m. with a Pancake Breakfast, followed by Fun Runs and the annual baseball game between the Townies and Councillors. Childrens games start at 10 a.m. followed by the popular noon parade. Opening ceremonies start about 1 p.m. when the Glen Citizen of the Year and winner of the Best Decorated House are announced. Games, an eclectic music concert, pet show and the Duck Race round out the afternoon activities. Meanwhile the day kicks off in Actons Prospect Park at 6 p.m. with Concert in the Park. This includes the Second Annual Acton Idol Contest and songs from headliner Alysha Brooke per- forming county and western tunes along with Jamie Thorne. Yuk Yuks Jeff McEnery will also pro- vide stand-up comedy as well as be the Master of Ceremonies for the Acton Idol Contest. The Acton Fire Fighters Association provides the explo- sive finish to the day with a fireworks show, also in Prospect Park. The free event gets under way at dusk. The firefight- ers, who are promising their largest, loudest and brightest display ever, will be passing their helmets for donations to help pay for their annual birthday gift to the community. St. Albans Church in the Glen will also be holding a fire- works display at dusk. Its also a free will offering. Photo by Graham Paine Just getting a team into the 2008 World Pond Hockey Championship apparently was tough enough for Georgetown resident Kevin Ward, never mind finding a place to stay in Plaster Rock, N.B. on a frosty February week- end. Even with strong family ties to the town with a population of 1,200 and two motels, Ward said securing accommodation is a diffi- cult task for the four-day tournament that draws 120 teams from around the world. The event began modestly enough in 2002 with 40 teams from the Maritimes as a fund- raiser to build an arena in Plaster Rock, whose residents open their homes to approximately 8,000 visitors drawn to Roulston Lake for the festivities, which include an outdoor kitchen party on Friday night. Now with 120 teams, attracting entries from as far away as Los Angeles, Ca., Latvia, Switzerland, Egypt, Germany, theres a lengthy waiting list and Ward had to call on a couple of uncles on the organizing committee to get his squad entered last year for the first time. To play on the pond that my dad played hockey on as a kid and because a lot of our rel- atives are volunteers there, its pretty awe- some, said Ward, whose brother Bryan was a last-minute scratch due to business commit- ments. We kept hearing about how great it was and we thought wed play in it. Last year, all of our games were at 6:30 or 7:30 at night and it was about -35C and I got frostbite on my toes. Youre out on the lake and the only place to go to get warm is the beer tent. Just being out there socializing is one of the great parts about it.
