Police blotter Cars entered at commuter lot Halton Police are warning area residents about a fraud scheme that has been circulating via e- mail in Oakville recently. Police are investigating several complaints from Oakville residents regarding the spam e- mail received from an unknown person. This past month several residents of that com- munity have received random e-mail messages that appear threatening in nature from an unknown sender. Police say the e-mails are an apparent fraud scheme to extort money. The spam e-mails are not specifically addressed to any one person in particular, and are sent to business and personal e-mail addresses. In the e-mails the sender alludes he has been hired and paid money as a contract killer to track down the person receiving the e-mail and to kill them. The sender advises that a friend of the recip- ient has arranged and paid for this contract killing to take place. The person sending the e-mail indicates the recipient can have the pertinent information regarding the identity of the client for an amount of money. Police advise people not to respond to these types of e-mail messages and say thousands of these e-mails are sent out daily around the world with the intent to alarm and defraud citizens who respond out of concern. Many of the solicitations are sent from outside of Canada and in many cases from various countries in Africa, say police. People are encouraged to report apparent fraud incidents to Phone Busters at 1-888-495- 8501 or at www.phonebusters.com or www.recol.ca. Phone Busters is a joint program between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and OPP that collate fraudulent solicitations received by tele- phone or e-mail. Police warn about e-mail fraud scheme
