In spite of the fact she and her husband Gilbert have lived in the same house on Prince Charles Drive in Georgetown for 53 years, she is only celebrating her 20th birth- day today. You see, Preston is a leap year baby, so her birthday only comes once every four years Im finally going to be 20, joked Preston, Ive been a teenager for quite some time now, and we all know how teens can be a bit diffi- cult at times. I figure now that Im 20, I should be a lot easier to get along with. Born on a farm near Dundalk (north of Shelburne) February 29, 1928, Preston said she usually had to celebrate her birthday February 28, except for her second birthday (when she turned eight.) When I turned eight years old my mother invited all the kids from the one room school I attended to have a birthday, said Preston. That was the only really big party I ever had, being a leap year baby. At age five (in 1948) she married Gilbert Preston, and they later raised their daughter Sharon, originally living in Glen Williams, until they moved into a new house on Prince Charles Drive in 1955, and remain one of the few original residents living on that street. Preston worked for Dominion Seed House for 13 years until daughter Sharon finished school, and she later worked for Varian (now CPI) for 12 years, while husband Gilbert was an employee of Smith and Stone for more than 50 years. When asked how she would celebrate turn- ing 20 this weekend, Preston said she would be going out for dinner with her daughter and son-in-law, as well as their two grandchildren. The kids always make it special on leap year, said Preston, since it is my real birth- day. Preston said 2008 is a busy year for her. Not only is she turning 20, but in June, she and Gilbert will be celebrating their 60th wed- ding anniversary which is quite an accom- plishment for a 20-year-old.
