Acton/Georgetown, Friday, February 29, 2008 13 SPORTS & LEISURE The Brampton Capitals forged their way back into the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League play- off series against the Georgetown Raiders after posting a 5-2 victory at the Alcott Arena on Wednesday evening. Georgetown still led the best-of-7 West Division semifinal series 2-1 heading into Thursdays fourth game at Bramptons Memorial Arena, where the Raiders have already won three games this season. Game five will be held Satur- day at the Alcott Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. Kevin Tuc- key netted the game three winner late in the second period for the Caps and lead- ing scorer Cody Crich- ton added a pair of insurance markers in the final frame. Winger Jeremy Wick, just having returned from a three- game suspension, had both George- town goals. The Raiders outshot the visitors 11-6 in the first period but trailed 2- 1 and despite having several power play opportunities, only found the net once with the man advantage on Bramptons excellent goalkeeper, Taylor Hewson. In last years playoffs, fourth- place Georgetown easily knocked off the division-champion Capitals in five games thanks in part to a rash of injuries to Bramptons netminders. But in the 6-foot-4 Hewson, the Capitals have a formidable puck- stopper this time around who drew the ire of the Raiders Wednesday for repeatedly dislodging the net from its pegs, twice just before the hosts thought they had scored. As well, Brampton had a better road record (16-7-2) than it did on home ice (14-9-1), twice winning at the Alcott Arena during the regular season. (The Cap- itals) seem to play better in our rink and weve played well in theirs for the most part, said Raid- er coach James Richmond. With the West Division, you never know. A team can be down two or three nothing and then come back and win four straight. The Raiders, meanwhile, were hoping the return of top forwards John Seymour and Anthony Luciani from suspension would spark their offence through the rest of the series. In the other West Division semifi- nal matchup, Oakville fell 2-0 at home Tuesday night to the upstart Milton IceHawks but the first-place Blades were back in form Wednesday, downing the host IceHawks 6-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. Photo by Eamonn Maher It will likely come down to a clash between Rebels in the pool when Georgetown District High School plays host to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations swim champi- onships next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Etobicoke Olympium. Approximately 1,400 swimmers are expected to race at the meet and GDHS qualified 31 ath- letes to compete in individual and relay events. Head coach Jon Newcombe figures it will be a close call between his Rebels and the Riverside High School Rebels of Windsor for the overall team points championship. Georgetown had a dominant showing at last weeks Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships in Hamilton, with several first- place finishes, although no team totals were recorded as the swimmers were attempting to achieve OFSAA qualifying standard times. Along with 11 relay teams, the Rebels will send the following individuals to the provincials next week: Elizabeth Skuriat, Caitlin Porter, Rob Stuart, Denaka Bodrug, Cameron Elgie, Ricky Davids, Gareth Viray-Cox, Jen Ormiston, Chris Bellman, Gresham Kimm, Tasha Truscott, Rebekka Bond, Romana Matthews, Alex Marshall, Kyle Hansen, Drake Livingston, Michael Niemeier, McKenzie Kimm, Karl Massey and Jason St. Jacques. Christ the King of Georgetown will also have representatives at OFSAA, including Nicole Buchanan, Marc Laforet, Holden Vetro and Kaitlyn Knox. Volleyball After an evenly played first set fell 25-23 in Georgetowns favour, the senior Rebels went on the attack on their home court Tuesday afternoon against Hamiltons Cardinal Newman, winning the subsequent contests 25-9, 25-8 to earn the GHAC girls AAAA title. Co-captains Katie Banks and Meghan Shantz led the charge for the Rebels, who were bolstered by the large crowd on hand for their first GHAC home game in a few years. With just one defeat through league and play- offs, Georgetowns seniors now move on to the OFSAA AAAA finals next week in Scarborough, involving 16 teams. Also headed for OFSAAs are the Acton Bearcats, who defeated Hamiltons Academie Catholique Mere-Teresa in five sets on Tuesday afternoon to win the GHAC A senior girls qualifi- er. The host Bearcats dropped the first game 25- 22, then took the next two 25-16 and 25-22 on High school roundup Rebels send 31 into OFSAA pool See SENIOR, pg. 14 EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The Georgetown Roller Hockey League will hold another sign-up ses- sion for the 2008 season on Saturday, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex.
