This week celebrates adult learners across the coun- try and the joy of learning throughout life. This year the event will highlight the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Across this country and around the world, adult learning and literacy festi- vals and events share a common pur- pose they are advocacy tools for rais- ing the profile of adult learners and life- long learning; they mobilize individuals to take advantage of the multitude of learning opportunities open to them; and they serve as a reminder that adult learn- ing can be a powerful instrument for change. Right here in the North Halton com- munity, Literacy North Halton is working hard on a daily basis assisting adult learn- ers. Reading and writing its what we do best! Do you know another adult that could do with a little help with his or her read- ing and writing? Statistics state that one in five adults in this community need our help with their reading, writing and math skills. How do you identify such a person? Avoidance excuses for not read- ing and writing. I forgot my glasses or I hurt my hand. Actions often shows up very early, late, or not at all for appointments. Interactions asks few or no ques- tions about printed information Writing has difficulty filling in forms accurately and/or completely History away from school or work for a long period, i.e. illness, sus- pension, stays home And these are just a few examples. So whats different about LNH (Literacy North Halton) because there are lots of choices out there for further edu- cation? Personalized service: yes, we really mean it. Through a tutoring program based on LNHs personalized approach, you will gain important skills in reading, writing and math as well as confidence and increased self-esteem which will give you the motivation to reach your fullest learning potential. How can we tell how much help someone needs? By using our Skills Assessment, which includes diagnostic tools and personal interviews, we are able to generate a personalized training plan which helps us to assist the student in meeting his/her individual learning goals. In our Read*Spell*Write Program our tutors are volunteers they give up their own time to teach students. All we ask of the students is to turn up! Just once a week for three hours. How hard can it be? Literacy North Halton offers an encouraging and supportive environment that gives you the tools to excel now and in the future. Want to know more?
