As March Break is just starting, parents and care- givers are reminded to alert children under their care to the dangers that exist near the water and to avoid these areas or ensure children are supervised when anywhere near waterways. Although cooler temperatures and mixed precipita- tion are called for over the next few days, warmer tem- peratures are imminent. The warm weather will result in melting snow, which will increase water levels and stream flow speed. The potential for flooding and ice jamming increas- es significantly if heavy rains also occur during the snowmelt. Slippery and unstable stream banks and extremely cold water temperatures can lead to very hazardous conditions close to any water bodies. Snow- covered or frozen ponds can also be hazardous as the weather gets warmer. CH monitors water levels and flow rates year round as part of its flood forecasting and warning program and will closely observe spring water levels. For more information call 905-336-1158 or visit www.conservationhalton.on.ca for up-to-date informa- tion on watershed flood status. Especially as March Break approaches Conservation Halton warns residents to use caution around area waterways
