Bill Sanderson, who built the wheelchair ramp for his wife, called the fee unfair as it was built out of necessity for his wifes ingress and egress from the house, particularly in emer- gency situations. While the fee is actually $1,500, staff had reduced it to $900. I built (it) out of necessity and its for a handicapped person, Sanderson told council- lors at a recent meeting, wondering if this was discrimination. I think this Town should be able to do something for handicapped people instead of charging them $900 extra to build a wheelchair ramp, he said. And council agreed, approving the reim- bursement. Director of Planning Bruce MacLean noted that staff is considering situations like this as the department develops the Towns new com- prehensive zoning bylaw, and will be working towards a policy on this.
